And So It Begins...Again!

 With the construction phase of the S&DR ‘box finished, things have now come full circle as, today, with all the appropriate paperwork (CDM-Regs, Risk Assessments etc) now in place, we made the first constructive moves towards resurrecting the much bigger Junction ‘box. 

All the decaying foundations of yesteryear have been removed to reveal the original concrete base on which they were resting. Steve & Andrew, our structural engineer and architect respectively, sensibly decided to adopt a ‘belt and braces’ approach and beef this up with another 350mm cap of steel-reinforced concrete. Today we began laying the formwork, which will contain this 25 tons of concrete. When finished, this will give us an unimpeachable base on which to start the build.

Frame installation: Day 1

A slightly different set of blogs this time, so as to show 3 days' work to install the ex-Pesspool Junction frame. As detailed in previous posts, this is a North Eastern Railway, Central Division / I'Ansons frame which seems to (now) be unique, aside from several quadrants thought to still reside in the remains of Broomielaw box. Over the last year, we have been stripping down the various components for the frame, cleaning them thoroughly, and painting them as appropriate. Saturday morning saw all the separate pieces brought out from storage, and loaded onto the Pipe Wagon, for transport up to the box. Initially we placed the items in the best order for unloading, but when space became an issue, sadly we stacked the quadrants on top of some of the earlier pieces. Leverage

No, not in the blackmail sense... To operate the heavy signals and points, the levers in the box are pretty long, and travel a greater distance in order to move the point rodding or wires only a little way. A nice bit of physics / mechanics in action... As you may recall from previous posts, we have been stripping and painting (in primer) the 22 levers for the box, ready for their installation. These have had the lower sections painted in grey enamel to match everything else under the box and aid maintenance / inspection. We have also been cleaning up and preparing the pivots for installation, along with the plates that link the levers, lever tails and pivots. These had previously been painted in red oxide, but the oil holes for the bearings themselves were pretty solidly caked! Fortunately, removing one split pin and applying a bit of force resulted in separation.
