The Arms Race Is On!

Image
Looking back over recent work and previous blog posts, there is more to report on the North Eastern Railway, Central Division signals. A lot of research and a lot of physical work has been taking place in order to get the arms themselves sorted. As you may remember, or have noted from previous entries, the Central Division was unusual on the NER in NOT having slotted posts, with the arms inside. Very few bits of CD signals remain, and we were lucky enough to have a complete set of castings for the masthead.  When it came to the length of the arms, however, things got a little trickier, since initially we did not have any drawings or specifications. Fortunately, at Kew, there are various documents and drawings. We were given a photograph of one of these drawings, which contained what we thought was a definitive answer: the arms are shown as being 4'6" long, beyond the end of the arm weight casting. Having tried to source these in Cedar without any success (they are rather large...

As the weather permits, the Moles have been busy digging for victory... but it feels as though we're going round in circles. We dig a hole, plonk a lump of concrete in it, and fill it back in again! Rest assured, the work does have a purpose: this is the installation of the concrete bench legs for the rodding run. If we can get them all in before the weather turns, we won't be drowned Moles!! We can then tackle fitting the tops later on, in the knowledge that the hardest, physical work has been completed. The ground varies significantly from hole to hole, but we have managed 2 concrete legs a day, combined with other tasks on site. These photos are from the last two days on site, and this section of the rodding run sits between the Tebay and Eden Valley lines. We didn't want to tackle this part of the run any earlier, given the focus on getting the box looking complete internally (more work will take place on days when the weather leaves something to be desired!!). Our digg...

Dig, Eat, Sleep, Repeat...

No rest for the Moles. We've been putting off digging for the next benches that require installation, owing to the need to get the box progressed with the frame, in readiness for the big gala... Whilst the weather is good, we could no longer put off the digging, and set to with the largest excavation. Just outside the box, we squeeze a bench for most of the signal wires to run on flat wheels, carrying them underneath the 4 lines. In the same place, we have to get wire stakes in place for the other signal wires, ducts to feed on to the Junction box as well as leaving enough space for the drainage run. We moved the bench so that it was adjacent to the hole, using a small trolley. Timmy's help with the digging wasn't necessarily constuctive... If that weren't enough, the ground we had to dig, to the levels required, had a few 'challenges' to overcome. Such as big rocks, cement leftovers from the building works and a mound of rubble! Motivational encouragement was p...

Signals!

This post covers progress with the NER Central Division signals. Previously we drilled all the front bearing castings for the NER CD signals. This left the rear bearing castings to tackle, but these are slightly more complicated, as the hole needs to be drilled at an angle, so as to match the post taper. This was achieved by marking out the centre, then carefully setting up the casting on the radial arm drilled table, clamped accordingly. A pilot hole followed, being opened out gradually until 1.1/4" diameter was reached. Note the shimming at the two ends of the casting to get the required taper The corner mounting holes will be marked out individually to suit the individual posts: just to take into account and variations in the drilling. Hopefully they will all end up the same... Once the first on was completed, it was fitted to the post for No.17 (the Tebay platform starter), marking the first new CD signal assembly for well over 100 years! The spectacles required a little more ...

Making NER Central Division signal fittings ...actually fit!

The remaining front bearing plate castings were drilled by Alex, Dave and I, following on from the marking out Will did previously. This part of the job was very straightforward, and we soon had them all done. Drilling interrupted for a photo Concentration! It then got rather more complicated, as we came to offer the front bearing up to the post itself. We knew the casting fitted the routed posts, as we trial-fitted these before planting the posts. The central hole through the post, for the spindle itself, was drilled oversized to cater for any discrepancies. Or so I thought! ...unfortunately, it appears that this drilling of the post (hopefully in the singular) was out by more than expected. Looking through the post to the casting beyond, showing the margin of the error. After much shuffling to see if we could make it work, I took the more brutal option, and set to with a hammer and chisel, opening out the post hole to suit. At this stage I can confirm the castings are correct, the ho...

More Boring Jobs

A new progress update from Tim:  Readers of my ramblings may well remember the posts alluding to all the new castings of NER Central Division signal components. They may also recollect the preparations carried out to the wooden signal posts in order to accommodate the said castings... Routing out the signal posts Well, after much avoidance of setting to and drilling out the castings, ready for f tting up, things got serious! In the machine shop, the radial arm drill has been commissioned, and appropriate training carried out. The raw castings, as collected from the foundry, but left to weather, slightly. The castings were cleaned up and marked for the hole centres whilst suitable clamping arrangements were devised for the work. The first front bearing casting, clamped down onto a couple of spacers to raise up from the bed and prevent damage drilling through. The four mounting holes were drilled in one go, once the centres were marked and double (triple!) checked, but the centre piv...

Specialised Mole Activities

Hot on the heels of the previous update as to the optimal working conditions for the Moles of Kirkby Stephen, more digging has occurred! The signal box requires power and other cables running to it. These are carried in ducts. The ducts need burying underground. The digger had issues trying to dig a trench as the water table was too high. So it's a case of the Moles' talents being required! A lot of the run has already been completed, the ducts dropped in and the trench filled accordingly with sand. The last section under the bridge and into the box itself needed tackling once the rodding run was in place and before the lead out bench and walkway could be completed. So, the Moles set to; having established the fixed points in the run, and the best route between them. This wasn't set in stone: rather, stone was found that caused slight diversions!! Thanks for reading. More news soon..
